Well, it's a bit crude but I just run 'time gedit' and then press the x
on the window border immediately when it has loaded. Then the second
time i run it the mouse will be over the x when it has loaded, so i can
get a more accurate time. It's not perfect, but it is consistent which
is why I included times for other common apps to compare.

Yeah, I just tried as root and with a fresh user account and I get
similar times. Crazy. I'm going to have to try and work out what is
uneique about my user account. It's not the themes, i've tried with load
of different ones.

Anyone have any idea which dotfiles could effect gedit?
