Re: [Deskbar] Idea - integrate deskbar in the gnome menubar

I'm not sure I understand most of your points, Alexey.

Not sure how that relates to this. You prefer stuff on your panel, is
that what you're saying?

Doesn't that argument defeat the whole purpose of deskbar's existence?
Why have it at all if 99% of the time you only need the command line or
alt+F2?

So, how do you know users actually want it on the panel and not on the
menu? Did any of those friends have deskbar on their menus, so they
could compare? Or are you talking about them having it on the panel as
opposed to NOT having it at all?

I did install deskbar on friends' and relatives' computers, actually.
Most of them -casual users mainly- did not use it at all because they
didn't relate it to launching stuff. I put it there on the panel,
explained what it did. But it was, as you say, "another launcher". And
useless for them, as such.

What I'm proposing is to integrate it into the already existing launcher
instead.

I don't personally know anyone who does. Sorry.

But one of my points is that, if integrated in the gnome menu, using
deskbar would NOT require more clicks or key presses than it does now.
Clicking "apps" or pressing alt+F1 should automatically put the focus on
it, right as clicking the applet or pressing alt+F3 does now. So, again,
what do you mean exactly?

I honestly doubt we would lose any existing users. As I said, the
integration could easily be undone through the menu editor. Also, having
it on the menu doesn't mean you could NOT still put it on the panel.

Again, why not make both ways possible? So I can have it on the menu and
you can have it on the panel, where you like it?

I'm not discussing Vista's merits as a whole, but proposing a feature I
have seen actual people say they miss in Gnome. I think you're rejecting
a feature merely because it is in Windows, and not giving actual reasons
for it.
