Can you use lsof to find out if there is another application (ie, beagle
instance) is holding open that file?  I would expect such a sharing
violation to only happen if something else was writing to that file
while we tried to read from it.

Yeah, a sharing violation is (supposed to be) a temporary situation, so
it retries the task.
