probably you had some reason, I had it on a Fat32 patition, but i now I get the  following...

ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/config/.

It works fine here on Ubuntu.
I see that copying of some files fails. Can it be that the directory
you checked the code out is not writeable?
