You can fork the project into your own space, and push your branch to
your forked repo.
Then you can open a merge request.
I hope more people use this process to contribute to BuildStream. Thanks for the suggestion Mathieu.

Note that we normally hand out "developer" access to push merge request branches directly the main repo...
basically to anyone who asks (developer access need not be controlled as it does not grant permission to
touch protected branches). We have been encouraging this instead of the fork approach on gitlab.
This is entirely just for convenience sake, so contributors need not setup CI in their repo and can more
easily rebase against upstream master (its also more convenient for reviewers as we can easily rebase merge
requests in the main repo).
