May I suggest the Sandisk Clip+? It has removable storage (so up to 64gb which is like $50 plus whatever one you buys base memory), good battery life, great output power and quality to drive up to 60ohm headphones easily. Plus if it ever breaks just take the card out and put it in a new one. Not that it will break, my girlfriends one lives in a handbag happily.
Although I do suggest installing rockbox, an alternative firmware with more features than you have even heard of.
