Hi folks!

I usually don't rant that way on a mailing list, as it does not help
very much, but this time, one of my essential applications is not usable
anymore and I want to fix this.

Since I installed Fedora 18, Banshee does not work 10 minutes straight.
It crashes frequently (DBUS misconfiguration it seems [1]), it always
starts with 100% volume ([2], [3]) and sometimes, the next track does
not start playing at all. This is all very frustrating and I'm very
surprised, how unusable banshee is under Fedora 18. On Fedora 17,
Banshee was the perfect music player.
I really don't know, where the bugs come from (it looks like it's in the
DBUS and the volume issue is a Banshee bug), but I got the impression,
that these problems are not recognized as major. I would be glad to help
out fixing the identified bugs (testing, reporting back), as my Banshee
is not usable at the moment.

I really hope, that the bugs get some attention and that I can help to
make Banshee on Fedora awesome again!
This really should not be any finger pointing, I just want to find a
solution!

To be fair: The flat-volume trick helped and also the Ubuntu upstream
patch improved the situation a bit. But nonetheless, if you install
Banshee in a vanilla Fedora 18, it is not usable.

Kind regards,
Philip

The flat volume bugs are likely desktop policy issues, if we are not complying with some setting for GStreamer or PulseAudio I am unaware of the situation. I don't quite know what to do about those issues off hand at least.

The dbus issue I think meebey (the guy who does most of the packaging of Mono in Debian/Ubuntu) just committed a workaround for in GConf#, since marking libdbus thread safe has been deemed unsuitable by that upstream.

The commit to his repo:
https://github.com/meebey/gnome-sharp/commit/e9d06b56a54dcd399d1d3eaaf62bdacb7e07084d

The relevant bug in the GNOME bug tracker:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683830

Your Banshee experience will likely be better if you convince Fedora to include that commit, I will poke meebey about pushing it upstream.

Kind regards,
David Nielsen
