John,
Check out JRivers Media Centre 19. It is still in the beta stage, but
I'm switching from Windows 9 to Linux Mint Debian Edition and expect
JRivers Media Centre 19 to be great once the product is on the market.
You can download it or even MC 19 for Mac and Windows for a trial run.

Good luck installing it on Mint. I downloaded the .deb file but it is
only 32-bit and it won't install because of missing dependencies.
Sadly, the company won't make the source code available. I will not pay
money for programs whose developers won't let me modify it to suit
myself.

Give me open source software. If it is open source I can compile it to
run on any platform, and I can change it to be the way I want it to be.

I really prefer Banshee. The only problem is failure to render UTF-8
characters. This is probably easily remedied, but I don't have time to
get into the code and figure out how to fix it.
