I have the newer stock Android phone with libmtp. MTP is currently a big mess. It mostly crashes any music player or if it doesn't it would not be detected. Bug are already been filed. Hope this is fixed soon.

If you have an android phone, you should be able to put it into Mass storage mode.  For others, I m not aware of the crash you described. As you underline that it is happening on both banshee and rhythmbox, it could be related to a shared library.
