In addition testing disabing compositing, check your gtk theme. I personally use qtcurve on opensuse and fedora in kde without issue. I do have some rendering artifacts when I use gtk-oxygen. Banshee is most thoroughly tested on traditional gtk themes like clearlooks.

Yeah the netbook is just using the on board intel graphics, the PC has an
Nvidia GeForce GTS 250.
