Thanks for all your responses.

I don't think I have the same issue you're having Mac.  I'm embedding the
metadata into the file itself so that I can play the file with other music
players (if I or others in my house wish to) and still have the metadata
available without having to add it by hand again.  (I have a lot of
classical music, and rarely to does music management software automatically
add the metadata---if it can find it---the way I want.)

I've done a little more troubleshooting.  If I rip a cd into ogg format with
the same software, Banshee has no trouble reading and displaying the
metadata whether the file is on the local machine or on the server.  So it
seems to have something to do with the flac format.

I also tried comparing Banshee's behavior when I right-click on the file and
tell it to "play with Banshee" as opposed to when I import the file into
Banshee's media library.  The problem I was having arose with the former of
these two methods; selecting a set of flac files, right-clicking, and
telling my computer to open them with Banshee resulted in Banshee playing
the file but not displaying the metadata.  Something slightly different
happened when I imported the music and played it.  In the Libraries > Music
window, the track that happens to be playing displays the correct metadata
in the list of tracks in the album at the bottom of the window.  However,
all of the non-currently-playing tracks show "unknown artist" and "unknown
album".  Also, no album art shows in the albums windows, but the correct
album art shows up at the top beside the slider, pause, and forward and back
buttons.  If I open the Now Playing window, the album art is shown beside
correct metadata.  I don't know if this is something that would be solved
with the feature that you point out Andres.

I'm relatively new to things, so I've never filed a bug report before.  If
it's warranted, however, I'll give it a shot.
