I thought there was a bug open already discussing how to make this
faster - maybe write a sqlite db to the device itself, or something.

Have you tried Banshee 2.0.0? There was a leak in gio-sharp that
might be the culprit here.

You can right click the cover art in the View -> Show Cover Art image
or the Track Information editor image.
