How much CPU is Banshee using?  You can check with the Gnome System Monitor or run `top` in a Terminal.  Do you have any other CPU-intensive processes running when Banshee skips?  If Banshee's CPU usage is high (or even if it's not) you might want to check the lower left corner of Banshee's window.  If there's a spinning animation there, that means Banshee is working on something in the background.  IIRC, Mirage runs a fairly CPU-intensive scan of the music library when you first set it up, and some other extensions might also (BPM, maybe?).  These shouldn't be using so much of the processor that it interferes with music playback, though.

You might also collect some useful debugging information by running banshee from the terminal with the command `banshee-1 --debug`.  If you start collecting logs, it probably makes more sense to open a bug report than to talk about it on the mailing list.  Instructions for reporting bugs are here: http://banshee.fm/file-bugs, and I'd be happy to help you out if you have questions.
