With some themes (or engines or versions of gtk?), Banshee's notification-area icon doesn't have a transparent background.  IIRC, this bug comes from farther up the stream (gtk-sharp, maybe?), which is why it hasn't been fixed in Banshee yet.  The relevant bug report is here in case you want to read more or help with a fix: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588255

If you're using Ubuntu 10.04, you could install the Banshee Community Extensions and enable the AppIndicator extension.  If you frequently scroll or middle-click on the Banshee notification-area icon, the AppIndicator might not have all of the features you're used to, but it will visually blend with your system quite a bit better.

Mine does too, although my panel isn't transparent, it's showing up like

Where is this icon located? It's possible it just needs the background
removed, but I haven't been able to locate it.
