Well, for starters you could have provided some more info about your system, say what version of ubuntu you're using...
Did you check that you hadn't inadvertently muted the sound?
I would suggest you try
ubuntuforums.com though, because this list is intended for banshee specific issues/questions/etc...

The problem from what I remember is that ipod-sharp hasnt been ported to
devicekit (or maybe some other components that replaced HAL too) yet. I
hear some people are working on it but its not high on the Ubuntu
developers list of things to do. It has been broken since Karmic. The
upside is that rhythmbox is still working fine with iPods.
