I think the bug you're running into is this one:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=619036 It seems to be pretty common with Banshee 1.6 and newer. If you subscribe to that bug report, you'll get an email update when the bug is fixed, in case you're interested.
