Both of these ideas (extensible views and tag clouds) are great - I'd
love to see them. I've even done some work toward the former a few
occasions - but I feel like I usually fall into doing too complicated
a solution. The source-contents branch in gitorious
(http://gitorious.org/banshee/mainline/commits/source-contents)
contains that work. Though it is for replacing the entire
SourceContents, a related concept is letting what browsers/filters
exist be configurable and extensible (see
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=540873).
I'm not working on either of these of late, so feel free to dive in,
try that branch out, or work on your own approach to it.
