When I started developing ClutterFlow I had also hoped Banshee would provide an easy way to extend it's 'views'. For now extensions are mostly limited to sources that have their own specific contents (or views). So plus one by me for this suggestion! I think it could be easy enough if you'd make a wrapper around the abstract FilteredListSourceContents class (in the Banshee.Sources.Gui namespace). The wrapper could be a Gtk Container providing a simple bar with toggle buttons having icons representing the different registered views (like in iTunes). The registering and unregistering could be handled by a service (say FilteredListSourceContentsService), and the classes should ofcourse implement the ISourceContents interfaces. Sources could even set a property that restricts the available classes based on implemented interfaces.
