This functionality was very specially implemented exactly for this
reason. Additionally you can hover over the button and adjust the volume
with your scroll wheel.

I like that detail; thanks for thinking of that subtle, effective behavior.

I've updated the bug with this information and closed it as WONTFIX.

Good deal, but it's good to know you're considering alternatives for other OSes; I think that's most of what's motivating this discussion (though I can't speak for Christoph in bringing it up).
