I tend to agree with you.

<rant>

But since this is a project under the GNOME umbrella, I can pretty
much guarantee you that a feature like that will be dismissed as
"unnecessary UI bloat."

I'm all for doing stuff automatically and being smart.  But when
software smartness makes wrong guesses or has wrong data, leaving the
user stranded with no recourse but to tinker with system config files
or wait for the next release is the opposite of smart.
