I would if I thought it was a bug, but I suspected it was a result of something I had done, as it appears it was - I ended up deleting ~/.config/banshee-1 and reconfiguring, and it now appears to be working.  Could it be that 1.5 and 1.4.3 have differing configuration formats somewhere, and trying 1.5.0 had damaged the configuration somehow such that neither version would play?
I have successfully used both 1.4.3 and 1.5.0 with a deletion of the configuration between version changes.

I will file a bug if it is thought this might be a genuine problem.

I have seen this before, occasionally Gstreamer will for some reason think that files are html when they are clearly not. I mostly see it with video files in totem. I believe the right place to dig would be gstreamer for this one to be honest.
