Some additional information on my issue: When I ejected and re-mounted
the iPod shuffle, many of the incorrect files sizes reverted to their
correct amounts. However, there were still several files -- in fact, a
contiguous group of them in the file list that spanned but did not
exhaust two artists -- that still had their FLAC file sizes. The iPod
capacity graphic is now at 50%, the difference from the correct 25%
being precisely the over-counting of this block of "artificially large"
files. However, if I right-click on one of these files in the file list
and look at its properties, its File Size is the correct, smaller
number. Re-ejecting and re-mounting now doesn't change the file sizes
any further.
Adding more songs to the iPod follows the same pattern: some get their
correct sizes, some get the inflated FLAC sizes; ejecting and
re-mounting fixes some of the file sizes but not all. Repeating this
process until it converges with a full iPod, I'm now at 37% of the iPod
capacity. As before, all of the artificially large files have their
correct sizes reported under right-click -> Properties.
