I've actually given up waiting and just use amarok for syncing my iPod.
As far as I can tell, as far as iPod functionality goes:
- There used to be a sync button, but it hasn't been ported to the new
code base. All there is is copying.
- m4b (i.e., audiobook files) aren't handled at all
- podcasts don't sync to the podcast area of the ipod
I've noticed that copying from iPod to the PC is planned for some future
date, but I'd mention that the podcast sync bug has been around for
almost a year with no comments or activity that I can see.
Frankly, I'd recommend using amarok or gtkpod (or iTunes with the free
VirtualBox) to communicate with your ipod and use banshee for just
PC-based stuff. Might be harsh way of putting it, but banshee in its
current state is pretty much unusable for iPod.
To turn off the the automatic Rythmbox ripping, assuming you're on
Ubuntu Hardy, go to a Nautilus window, go to the Edit - Preferences
dialog, select the Media tab, and set the action for CD Audio to 'Do
Nothing'.
On the encorder, etc., questions, you do (again, assuming Ubuntu) need
to have the proper packs of gstreamer plugins - good, bad and ugly.
Audio CD Extractor (i.e., Sound Juicer) uses the same packages, so you
might want to check if it works to see if it's a package issue.

Sorry for being grumpy - insomnia, early morning, and I haven't finished
first cup of coffee yet. I really WANT to use banshee, I'm just
disappointed that it's taken so long - and really don't understand the
decision to port the code base and continue to introduce new
functionality while major chunks of old functionality haven't been
ported or fixed.

After many tries finally got Banshee installed and running. All the same
problems, not starting except via terminal.
After reloading from the PPA and then removing and installing from Synaptic
yesterday when it appeared on the repository, this is its current
status.....
Can't see any Sync button (my primary reason for wanting Banshee to be good)
My iPod Gen 5.5 Video is seen and everything seems to work but I can't sync
it.
I tried importing all my m4a files from my Windows PC iPod library, but the
'importing media' window just carries on importing for ever and doesn't
actually do anything and can't be shut down, although I can see all the
folders via the network.
I can Import my iPod contents into the library but obviously not the other
way around as no Sync facility.
CD importing starts and then says "could not find an encoder for ripping"
although Gstreamer is installed.
(I can't stop Rythmbox from automatically starting an running the CD, is
this the problem ?)
If I could get Banshee to do what it says on the tin it would be a brilliant
application. I tried using GTKPod on another PC and it promptly emptied my
iPod with no backup to disk.
I use Anapod Explorer on my WinXP PC and even that requires you to register
by email every iPod separately.
My Linux box is an Athlon FX2 with 2Gb Ram
This can't be just me. Any suggestions welcome.
