Re: [Banshee-List] Banshee-0.11.2

Banshee needs D-Bus to communicate with HAL, and also for a slew of other things.

Banshee works with NetworkManager, gnome-power-manager and probably a few other things over D-Bus. It also exposes it's own D-Bus interface so other applications can control Banshee.

Relating to HAL, it does DAP stuff, Audio CD stuff, and perhaps some other things that I don't know about.

While Banshee might be able to run w/o D-Bus access (I know older versions would work), it's definitely very untested as D-Bus is pretty much a prerequisite for a good Linux desktop experience.

Can you also verify that hald is running and that you can access it? Just emerge hal-device-manager; it's a simple interface that lets you view device info and will ensure that you can connect to HAL.

I've been running Banshee on Gentoo for ages and never seen this issue; however I'm always running from CVS HEAD. If you're upgrading from 0.11.0 to 0.11.2, it's possible (although unlikely) that this has something to do with the new managed D-Bus, which was introduced around 0.11.1 time.

Cheers,

Patrick

I haven't changed d-bus nor hal. I've just upgraded banshee.

emitrax xartime ~ $ ps fax | grep dbus
8326 ? Ss 0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system
9765 ? S 0:00 /usr/bin/dbus-launch --sh-syntax
--exit-with-session
9766 ? Ss 0:00 dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 8 --print-address
6 --session
27577 pts/5 S+ 0:00 \_ grep dbus
emitrax xartime ~ $

What does banshee need dbus for anyway? Is it just for the ipod?

Thanks a lot by the way!
Salvo

Note the exceptions....
are all from not being able to connect to HAL.

Either your HAL daemon isn't functioning, D-Bus isn't functioning
properly, or your hard drive is made of popsicle sticks.

Check to make sure that:
* D-Bus and HAL are running
** look for hald in memory
** try connecting with hal-device-manager or something
** try running dbus-viewer or dbus-monitor or something
** see if the D-Bus daemon 'dbus-daemon --system' is running

If everything seems to be running but you still can't get it to work,
try it out as root - in the past there have been strange issues with
D-Bus and permissions.

Good luck,

Patrick

Yes I did. That didn't fix it.

Any other idea?

Version of mono is 1.1.18-r1

I'm using Gentoo if that can help. Kernel version 2.6.17.6
