Note the exceptions....
are all from not being able to connect to HAL.

Either your HAL daemon isn't functioning, D-Bus isn't functioning properly, or your hard drive is made of popsicle sticks.

Check to make sure that:
* D-Bus and HAL are running
** look for hald in memory
** try connecting with hal-device-manager or something
** try running dbus-viewer or dbus-monitor or something
** see if the D-Bus daemon 'dbus-daemon --system' is running

If everything seems to be running but you still can't get it to work, try it out as root - in the past there have been strange issues with D-Bus and permissions.
