What type of mailbox is this?  If it's mbox, I can't help.  However, if  
it's a maildir, then it's probably on the last read message, which  
probably has to do with the order of the files in the directory (on  
disk, not as displayed in any listing).  If you display message number  
in the message list, it's probably the highest numbered message.  I  
keep meaning to file an enhancement request to explicitly allow initial  
focus on the newest or on the oldest unread, but haven't yet done so.
