This looks pretty much as gmime-2.2.17 bug reported early this year  
(2008-02-07 - check out archives). Gmime upgrade is strongly  
recommended.

PS. you do not have to rename entire ~/.balsa directory, only the file  
called mbox%2Fvar%2Fspool%2Fmail%2Fusername.
