With most of the entries I have in my gnomecard address book I get an error and the message is left in the out box.

cvs compiled with the option: --with-ldap --with-ssl --with-gpgme

When I've a look in the header it is wrong, here it is an example of the "To" field of a message, however, it was displayed correctly in the compose windows:

Alain L. <` X?"Xt>

I have a related (or meybe the same?) with my gnomecard (gnome 1 pim) address book: When I try to add an address containing a (non utf-8) national character using the auto-completition (i.e. by typing the first few chars of the name), the string in the to: entry is cut before the national char, and I see the usual "Invalid UTF8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()" in stdout. Adding the address from the list browser works fine, though. So there seems to be some problem with the utf-8 sanitise stuff for auto-complete.

I solved this problem with converting the GnomeCard-Addressbook with iconv to utf-8 and running Balsa with LANG="de_DE.UTF-8".

Balsa should recognize the charset of the address files and convert it to the current one (an example of such a filter can be found in the code of gedit or bluefish ;)

Hope that helps a bit.
