I'll get in touch with the admins over the spring break now that I have  
a clear picture of what to ask for. I'll see if I can sort something  
out.

Since you say the RFC states to try strongest auth first, kmail clearly  
must have included their IMAP login type options as a workaround for  
broken clients.
