this problem finally got fixed, wanted to thank everyone and let you guys 
know that when I followed your instructions (changing the mailbox from a 
directory to a file) it wouldn't work... for some reason balsa wasn't 
updating the file /home/mike/.gnome/balsa with the new information... I 
edited the file by hand and everything works...
