*sigh* I'm too tired to think straight, maybe I'm doing something really
stupid, but:
I decided to finally start (slow) work on better IMAP support for balsa,
so I updated to the HEAD revision of CVS, and compiled.
Now, the 0.6.0 release I compiled for debian works fine here, but this one
segfaults on start-up. gdb shows as follows:
jules@pear% gdb ./balsa
GNU gdb 19990928

This GDB was configured as "i686-pc-linux-gnu"...
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/local/src/gnome-cvs/balsa/src/./balsa
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

(gdb) frame 1

256 dp = opendir (balsa_app.local_mail_directory);
(gdb) print balsa_app.local_mail_directory
$1 = (gchar *) 0x80e6a38 "/home/jules/mail"
Now that all looks fine, so I can't see why opendir would segfault. SO I
guess it's a linking problem?
If so, here's the ldd line, FWIW:
jules@pear% ldd ./balsa
