This happens to me when I have no rights to access the /dev/dsp device
(e.g. someone else is logged on the console, and I do rsh to the
machine). Balsa links with esd and I would blame on this library. 

I think it is pretty annoying behavior: one should be able to use balsa
without /dev/dsp access. Unfortunately, I don't have an immediate
solution for this.
