Just to follow up on my last message, the corrected line would read
something like the following:
if( MAILBOX_POP3 (mailbox)->last_popped_uid == NULL
|| strcmp( MAILBOX_POP3 (mailbox)->last_popped_uid, uid ) != 0 )
etc...
