Intl problems with balsa

Hi,
  I got still some problems with getting a german localised balsa :)
It seems to ignore all LANG enviroment variables.
Is it correct, that the intl stuff is done by gtk/gdk ?
(I saw no -lintl or so in building the program)
Is there some way how I could track this down ?
