My suggestion is no matter how much sponsorship will we collect for this year.
If venue cost could be reduced, you can allocate more money to other expenses, travel & hotel subsidies for more oversea speakers (it can help to attract more oversea speakers or GNOME.Asia committee members to come) , additional tea, snacks, foods for speakers or participants (it can help social networking between speakers & participants).
In my point of view, GNOME.Asia is aimed to:
First, to gather people from local communities, it is most essential but doesn't enought for a .Asia event, right ? so we should try to expect for more (so go to 2nd point)
Second, to invite oversea speakers/contributers/members (from Asia and Worldwide) to come and exchanging knowledge and experiences, know more about each others. So, for a reference, it is over 20 speakers and friends visited Hong Kong for GNOME.Asia last year, even we were in very tight schedule to prepare last year.
So, if you can save more money in venue (if you can, it is not a must, don't worry :)), you can spend more on other expenses for benefit above aim #1 (and #2).
Therefore, back for your question, universities and/or non-profit making organisations are always helpful to lower the cost. I know univerisities isn't always free, but it might help to lower some costs on venue. :)
