COSUP / GNOME.Asia 2010 survey report



Dear all,

Just received a survey report in Chinese from COSCUP, overall GNOME has a lot of positive feedback! Please find below the translated summary of the parts related to GNOME.

A total of 188 candidates submitted their surveys

1) 44.7% of them is Linux users

2) Out of 84 Linux users, 73 of them (86%) use GNOME Desktop

3) In general, people's perception of GNOME after the conference is very positive:
  • GNOME 3 is very interesting, cool and attractive, looking forward to the launch
  • Learnt a lot more about GNOME through the event and will try it out
  • GNOME Shell looks cool and should try it out
  • GNOME education is very cool
  • GNOME has a lot of great tools
  • A lot of contributors in the GNOME project
  • Got so much new ideas about GNOME
4) There are some suggestions for GNOME:
  • Not to become MacOSX
  • The new GNOME Shell is too complex to do task switching, the "traditional" tarkbar-like UI is out fashion, but it's useful through many years.
  • GNOME/GTK+ should also focus a bit more on embedded devices, not to let KDE monopolise. Besides it is suggested to make a light version of GNOME
  • Chinese localisation is quite complete, but still have room for improvement e.g. Pango+Cairo applications, there is Chinese display problem
5) 75% of them would like to see more events similar to COSCUP / GNOME.Asia 2010

6) 62% of them would like to join the GNOME User Group meeting. Out of the people who are willing to join the meeting, 58% of them think the meeting should be hosted quarterly, 23% bi-monthly and 16% monthly.

7) 51% of them (96 people) left their email address for us to contact them to join the local GUG meetings

8) Which area you think GNOME Desktop should improve:
  • 19% Appearance
  • 27% Tools
  • 29% Usability
  • 9% Games
  • 5% Others (e.g. don't know, stability, lack applications)
  • 23% no answer

9)  82% people will recommend their friends to use GNOME
Out of 18% negative answer, the reasons of not doing so are:
  • Not familiar with Linux or GNOME
  • Friends are not using Linux
  • Prefer to recommend other desktop
