I have successfully updated gstreamer to 0.10.28 from the gstreamer-developer ppa:

https://launchpad.net/~gstreamer-developers/+archive/ppa

and it has enabled gapless, it seems. There is a strange behaviour though, if I enable replay-gain. On tracks without rgtags the beginning of the song is played twice -- about two seconds of each and every song. Disabled RG for now until I have time to gather info to file a bug.

You'll need to use the Lucid version of Banshee for that. Karmic does not have a
new enough gstreamer, so gapless is disabled.
