The Programmer Analyst Sr. may install, customize, and support vendor supplied software systems, analyze and resolve problems arising with the use of the software systems and communicate with users to determine requirements and assist in developing solutions to meet those requirements. The Programmer Analyst Sr. may design and develop software, design and develop hardware, work with product selection and purchasing, and work with data communications support. S/he may be responsible for supervising teams of developers (both staff and students), and is centered on working with cutting-edge technologies and applications. Additional Department Summary: Under limited to moderate supervision, designs, develops, and supports complex software systems to support The University of Alabama Libraries, Office of Library Technology; installs, customizes, and supports vendor-supplied software systems; analyzes and resolves problems arising with the use of software systems; architects, designs, programs, and debugs locally developed software modules to integrate with commercial and open source software, according to predefined functional specifications; provides programming support for Digital Services, Integrated Library System and Electronic Resources Management, and Web Services units within the Office of Library Technology. Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in a computer related field or other relevant field and at least three (3) years experience in development and maintenance of software applications, computer science, computer engineering, relational database management systems, computer programming, web development, system administration, network administration or other relevant experience. Ability to effectively communication, both verbally and in writing, with users of varying degrees of technical ability and understanding. Effective time management skills and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Accepted Equivalencies: Vocational or Technical School diploma in a computer related field or other relevant field and at least six (6) years experience in development and maintenance of software applications, computer science, computer engineering, relational database management systems, computer programming, web development, system administration, network administration or other relevant experience. Associate's degree in a computer related field or other relevant field and at least five (5) years experience in development and maintenance of software applications, computer science, computer engineering, relational database management systems, computer programming, web development, system administration, network administration or other relevant experience. Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications A successful candidate will demonstrate a portfolio of successfully completed projects. Must be fluent in C and Java programming languages and willing to learn others as needed; must be fluent in XSLT transformations and scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, JavaScript; must have deep working knowledge of HTML, XML and related technologies; must have substantial experience working on a Unix platform, and must possess working knowledge of SQL. Preferred Qualifications: Strongly prefer experience with the development of web services through API's. Experience with large-scale digital library applications and services and or institutional repositories; working knowledge of mySQL, Solr, Lucene, and Ruby on Rails.
