Now, the problem seems to be caused by XMLPUBFUN macro's in libxml/dict.h, but as far as I can trace, these 
are only used when compiling on MS-platforms.


  dict.h includes libxml/xmlversion.h and libxml/xmlversion.h should define it.
You probably have an older xmlversion.h laying around without those definitions.
