that's basically what I stated when Mark Vadoc proposed his
implementation
last year (BTW his code seems to work both on Windows crypto and
OpenSSL
if I remember correctly).

Actually this was more of a 'contribution' for win32 users that made use
of Win32 Inet functions to provide SSL/authentication support to
libxml2.  It didn't make use of OpenSSL.

maintaining and running his own patch for a bit more than a year and
that
one might be a good candidate for integration.

I have!  I can resubmit it if people want but it isn't really a
candidate to be put in cvs b/c it is win32 only.  The only thing I
changed since the regular patch is I now use win32 inet for http and
https to make use of built in caching provided.
