Well it's a question that is often asked.
Try
rpm --rebuild ......src-rpm
right, you can find the src.rpm at ftp://xmlsoft.org/
rpm --rebuild libxml2-2.5.1-1.src.rpm
or
rpmbuild --rebuild libxml2-2.5.1-1.src.rpm
for recent versions of rpm.
This will recompile the package locally for your system generating
libxml2-2.5.1-1.i386.rpm
Removing libxml2 isn't a simple operation because you probably obtain "dependence failure".
right too :-)
The right way is to update your current version.
using the -U flag of rpm
rpm -U libxml2-2.5.1-1.i386.rpm
