Speaking of "industrial uses", I would be interested in getting
feedback especially from industry professionals, in 2 ways:
- upcoming work: what are the point which may prevent
deployement of libxml2 within your enterprise, what's missing ?
What's broken ? W3C XML Schemas seems the most obvious candidate
but I would like to hear from my users on this. I also really
need to improve the documentation, especially a set of indexed
examples.
I think you've hit the right notes with XML Schemas and documentation.
We are using Schemas rather DTDs but, at the moment, where we use libxml2 we
don't require validation. However, this is likely to change in the future.
With regard to documentation, my biggest problem in using libxml2 has been
finding the correct functions to use. Everything seems to fit together very
neatly so I think I have found the correct ones, but some guidance would
have made it easier and given me more confidence that I was going about
things in an appropriate manner.
- use cases and "success story": basically I don't have any public
list of use case, if you use libxml2 for serious processing, think
about making a public statement, it will allow libxml2 to look
"professionnal" and also will give me references I can point
my management to when they wonder if my time is well spent, you
should consider this as being your own interest if you can do it!
Since we are still in the development phase, we have nothing to make a
public statement about, but for your information and the lists, this is how
we are using libxml2. We have our own virtual machine (written in C) that
runs our own language that is used for business applications by book and
journal publishers around the world. I am currently build XML document
processing into the virtual machine and language for use with web services.
We will be taking pieces of our existing application code and making that
functionality available as web services. The actual outward facing web
service is developed using .NET but this then calls into our virtual machine
which runs on OpenVMS, Solaris or Windows.
Talking of OpenVMS, has anyone considered building libxml2 on it by using
amended versions of the make files with GNU make? So far I've only used
libxml2 on Windows; I haven't even looked at building it on Solaris or
OpenVMS yet, so I may be talking rubbish.
