Either you get a unresolved symbol error, or worse, a run-time crash. The
libraries cannot be removed in general - but IMVHO there shouldn't be any
problems in growing the configure script a --enable-advanced-linker or
similar that would make it do the right thing for such platforms, and also
making it the default on such platforms.
