[xml] libxml installation query

Hi,
   I use redhat 7.1 which comes with libxml-1.8.10
& libxml-devel-1.8.10. I want to install the latest version
2.4.28....but when i try to uninstall the older versions....it tells me
that the libxml & libxml-devel are used by other packages.

I'd like to know if it is enough to updgrade libxml (& devel. pkg) to
the new version or must I uninstall the older versions & then install
freshly.
