 one over optimization of the parser internal loops broke this :-(
 Seems I owe some apologies to Ming Lu, the bug was really there.

   try the enclosed patch. But remmeber, the --noblank is a kludge
only your application can know precisely when a blank is significant or
not, it's better to fix the code to handle this.
