WM feature.
The main idea behind the wm spec is to define the interface that the desktop
uses to get the things it needs from the window manager. The desktop could
not care less about how the user wants the interactive window positioning to
work, so...
To my (limited) knowledge, the GNOME WM spec currently has info on:
. pager interaction
. window style hinting/layers.
. mouse click event routing for root window clicks.
These are the major things that the desktop needs. There may be
features to be taken from the kwm hints, as well.
People complained that the existing spec sucked to implement, blah blah, so
perhaps you can view your task as to do the same thing, but this time in a
manner people will like. :) Things like window position snapping are just
random window manager config options, which probably don't belong in this new
wm spec.
If you want to convince all the wm authors to adopt the same config file and
same set of options, that's another even more ambitious project.
