I'd also prefer a list of supported atoms, to allow more flexibility.
Applications can't assume much about the way hints will be handled (for
example, if they ask for shaded state and the wm doesn't support it, they
might get iconified instead). A list of atoms would help to clarify some of
this for application authors, because they would be able to check that a hint
is supported before using it. Perhaps they should be divided in terms of
functionality rather than having one atom for each hint which is supported
(for example, MWM function hints are supported, all toolbar-related hints are
supported, multiple desktops are supported, viewports are not supported).

I use a modified version of wm2 with Gnome - wmx has too many features. ;)
