MonoDevelop is not related to Microsoft at all and it is a quite capable IDE
for Vala.

I personally just use Gedit and compile using the command-line. There are
even plugins for Gedit which make it into an IDE for Vala (
http://code.google.com/p/vtg/ and http://yorba.org/valencia/).
