You were right! Hardcoding doesn't work either. But my gnome-terminal is
set to utf-8!?! So why?

Hmm... I thought all vala strings are handled as utf-8. So I casted the
buffer just like this:
print("%s\n",(string)buffer);
What would you do ?

From what you're saying it looks like a problem in your terminal
emulator. Does it support UTF-8? Try hard-coding some UTF-8 text, let's
see if it prints correctly.
