Actually, a middle click on a icon opens the application in a new
workspace and put it foreground. To let an app loading in the
background, you could drag the icon of the app in the workspace you are
in or in another workspace displayed on the workspace list on the right
of the overview. It could appear to be longer than middle clicking on
icons but it is, in fact, quite fast.
